Fruit of the Redwoods at Art@3G Saturday, May 9 2009

Rdwd_reliefs_2There is an amazing exhibit at the art gallery in my building, Art@3G in Fort Bragg, CA It’s called Fruit of the Redwoods and it’s on display until the end of June. The art has been created by Taiji and Masako Arita. The amazing part of this exhibit is that all of the pieces in the show are made from wood salvaged from stumps left over from logging operations in the Mendocino Coast region between the late 1800s and early 1900s. The shapes and motifs are simple, subtle, and extremely powerful, carved with sensitivity and humble regard for the grace and power of the ancient trees. Gallery owner Luz Harvey hung the show with great regard both for the artists and the medium. Peace surrounds you from the moment you walk in the door. It is like being in the sanctuary of a great cathedral or holy place. Definitely a world class installation.  I’ll include more photos in future blogs. See it if you can.

Peace of Buddha Friday, Apr 17 2009

peace of buddha

peace of buddha

Sometimes it’s hard to find the peace of buddha. Is it meditation that takes you there, or being there that helps it all make sense? Life can be full of challenges at times, and yet Ram Dass’s Be Here Now mantra is comforting. Be present with all of the emotions that come up and see what happens. I’m hoping I can find this peaceful state again soon…it has eluded me recently. Sometimes it is the moments when you are not expecting anything that allow peace to present itself unexpectedly. Be still and know.

Tomorrow is Friday…now that’s something to celebrate!

Movement or bust? Monday, Apr 13 2009

img_0314Well, since I STILL have not read the David Pogue book about my new computer and do not understand how to manage my photo program, I’m forced to use another image from the DeYoung museum I visited a few weeks ago. As fate would have it the image is about movement, and I’m feeling the urge to move…change is in the air. Is it because it’s Spring, and the sun has made an appearance again, despite the cold wind? Is it because my restless heart and soul need excitement and adventure? Is it because the human spirit needs to feel the joy of new beginnings?

No answer here…only the familiar longing to find my joy again.  Explore new territory…take chances? That’s me to a T…would not be advisable in real life, I might be told. I was once told that some people can get away with not following their soul path, and that I’m NOT one of those people. Hmmm…

Where does this old soul of mine want to go now??? Stay tuned….

Montessori school cat art

Montessori school cat art

Loved this little image done by a Montessori school student. So simple and striking, bold and colorful. I just love kid’s art! The local community college here is doing a lot more outreach to the community–booksignings, several all day college days open to the public, this small but wonderful art show of county wide kid’s art, and other offerings. I attended the Mendocino Coast Writer’s Conference at College of the Redwoods last summer. It was the first writer’s conference I had ever attended, and I was impressed. The community here is progressive, liberal, and offers a lot of interesting artistic possibilities considering its relatively small size. My favorite art gallery in Fort Bragg is Art at 3G.

Luz Harvey chooses fascinating shows with unusual artists ranging from conceptual art, modern painters like Taiji Arita, outsider art, and works from Art Explorers, an incredible organization in Fort Bragg that supports developmentally disabled artists as they produce their truly amazing work.

Artist's Manifesto from Middle School student

I’ve always loved kid’s art, and recently saw an exhibition at our local community college. All ages were represented.

Here is an artist’s manifesto from a girl in middle school, Alexandra Scott. I think it’s a wonderful piece–it inspires me once again with the bravery kids and young adults have when they make art. I’ve always been drawn to making art, whether it is “food art” which I did for a long time, or collage and conceptual art and writing, which I’m beginning to explore again now. Art and love are the two things that endure in life, which is probably why they both help us become the best we can be. Sally forth, artists of the world, and thank you for being here in these troubled times.
