My Nephew Val Saturday, Mar 7 2009

My nephew Val
This is my nephew Val. He was born in New Orleans. I still remember the day of his birth. He was slated to be a home birth, and at the last minute we had to transport him to the hospital, where the doctors wanted him to be a caesarean baby. His mother and he worked together and he came out just in the nick of time-no knife! I had been the “ambulance” driver in my station wagon, with his mother, father, midwife, and oxygen tank in the back. We drove through red lights and made it to the hospital in time. It was a dramatic entry into the city of New Orleans. His family left for New England while he was still a baby, and he grew up there. Hurricane Katrina brought him back to the city. He decided to help with the rebuilding, and has remained there since, living and working in that soulful city. You know what it means to miss New Orleans? It’s a place that gets inside of you and calls you back. I lived there for 15 years myself. I don’t talk to my nephew nearly enough, but I love thinking of him there, enjoying the music, the food, the inimitable spirit of the city that care forgot.

Kristin's Birthday cake

Kristin's Birthday cake

Had a great birthday on Jan 22nd This photo shows a little cake from my writer’s group. So sweet. We got a printing press, too, from small press Tabula Rasa. Well, Laurel Moss, our group organizer bought it from her friend Gizzy. A wonderful woman with a great sense of humor and a charming Swiss accent. We each got to print out a little test sheet. Later that night I had a bigger party with a group of friends. Just found some new photos from my phone and I’m going to put a few more on the blog! This year is going very fast. We’re almost to March and Spring. More winter storms coming our way, but they are mild compared to snowy winters. I like that.

This is my dear brother Kraig and his lovely wife Jane. They’ve been married for 25 years now, and have two sons, Val and Gavin. Val went to New Orleans, which just happens to be the city of his birth, after Hurricane Katrina, and has been there for several years now.  I’m waiting for a good photo of Val so I can post more about him. His brother Gavin is attending art school in Boston, and I have a post about him with a link to his blog! My brother recently retired after building a very successful architectural woodworking company from the “garage up”. Jane is studying painting at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. She loves fashion, especially jewelry! Kraig and Jane are now free to travel and love to do so–Most recent trips: Mexico and France. PS I introduced them!
